Niger Delta University - All You need to know

NIGER DELTA UNIVERSITY - ALL THERE IS TO KNOW
Main campus

In Nigeria, Choosing the right school for the right student at the most affordable and secure environment could be a daunting task.
This post is simply to "simplify" (Lol☺) things for the parent and the student. Kindly refer to my other posts to read up on more Nigerian Universities (private and public).

Brief History
Niger delta university, Wilberforce island, a public university founded in year 2000 by late Cheif DSP Alameiyeseigha(the then governor of Bayelsa state) is located in Bayelsa state in the southern part of Nigeria. The name of the school could be misleading (Niger Delta) giving the thought of a joint fellowship of the states in Niger Delta region.
On the contrary, the university is "state owned", which invariably means the state Bayelsa state government has the sole responsibility of funding (Lecturers/staff salaries inclusive) and running the affairs of the university.

AVAILABLE FACULTIES/COURSES OFFERED

At 16(year 2000 till date) the university has done impressively well rising from the unclassified category to one of the "much talked about" universities in Nigeria, generating buzz on social media and Inter-university academic completions..from the college of health sciences (CHS) to the Engineering faculty(recently representing the African region in the Petro Bowl competition to be held in Dubai in September 2016) , winning trophies and awards of excellence.

Niger delta university had one of the most affordable school fees in Nigeria until recently 😢 .
Nevertheless I would do the honors of mentioning the EXACT school fees(past and present).

Affordable huh?
With the recent spate in prices of everything in Nigeria due to economic crises, THE SCHOOL FEES HAS BEEN INCREASED IN THE 2015/2016 academic session.
School fees are now charged from NGN 100,000 - 128,000 for freshman ( year one, acceptance fee of NGN 20,000 included), though the change did not affect old/returning students, students admitted from 2016 would have to pay with the new scheme.

SECURITY
its safe to say that there is no guarantee on security (off and on campus) . nevertheless, Amassoma(Wilberforce island) is considerably safe with the presence of 1 police station and many state mobile police in patrol vans.

SOCIAL LIFE
Nightlife in Wilberforce island is not exactly exhilarating to say the least. A few karaoke bars, a few clubs/bars and many students hosted shows is all you get, No eatery presently just a hand full of "good restaurants".. But if your the type to eat "mama put" your in luck because the school has a major one called BEANS UP. There you get to eat to your satisfaction with as little as NGN50. So if you are looking for a great exhilarating social experience in a university.. You may have to think again.

Also only two (2) banks (1 branches)are available (Diamond & UBA bank) in the community ( Amassoma)..so if you are a bank loyalist..you should get ready to get either of the above bank accounts.

Alternatively, most students head to the capital city (Yenagoa) which is only 30minutes(NGN 100-400) by weekend for social activities, better purchases, and banking activities.

FINAL WORDS
After all said Niger Delta University (NDU) is a place for focused learning as there is little distractions 😀.
